It is not yet known what types of products will fall under the import ban. However, the EU is heavily dependent on slabs from Russia, and it is very expensive to launch its own production or look for alternatives.

The potential ban on the import of slabs may affect NLMK. It has five rolling mills in Europe - in Belgium, France, Denmark and Italy. Severstal has already refused to supply to the EU market because of the inclusion in the SDN-list.

The EU industry is very dependent on Russian metals as the energy crisis makes steel production extremely expensive and unprofitable. Experts believe that such sanctions can only make things worse for Europe.
